TV I am working on in a SONY KV32XBR400, bought in December 2000. I have the power-on problem that everyone talks about, time for me to follow the lessons from a few of you guy's experiences. I am reading! Thanks to Jehill today for the known problem list, I have the service manual already, so I'm ready to get going here. I am just going to start at it, going after the common stuff, I'd hate to throw this perfectly good (once it does power on) TV away...It's just a bear to get to turn on anymore...need to get this board out and go at it. I have everything except for 2 FBT wires disconnected to "free" the D-Board for removal. I can't seem to see how you disconnect the High Voltage wires from the FBT. My model is one of the early models which has the High Voltage distribution block which I know was removed from the design. I actually have the ANODE wire pulled out from the CRT already so that wire doesn't bother me, but the one that goes up to the C-Board (in the ?yoke? back part of CRT) from the FBT (the thinner red HV wire) I just can't seem to see how you disconnect this. Can I cut it and resolder it when I put it back, or is the high voltage not a good place to put any extra resistance. I don't know how touchy this thing is... THanks for any pointers.
I just could not remove either wire from the flyback. I had read somewhere that both wires should release with a push and twist motion. But I had no luck with that.
In the end, I disconnected the one thick red wire at the anode cap end as you've done.
And I just ended up cutting the smaller red wire that goes to the yoke mounted C-Board. After I reinstalled the chassis, I just spliced the two ends of the wire back together. My set has been working perfectly for nearly a year now.
So you can cut and splice that wire successfully.
But I would also be curious if anyone else can offer some tips on how to release the wire from the flyback.

I have a feeling that it would be obvious how to remove the old wires if you had new replacements in your hands. The same parts are used for both the KV36XBR400 and the KV36XBR450 and are as follows:
Part No.DescriptionPrice (USD) 1-251-715-22 CAP ASSY, HIGH-VOLTAGE 5.65 1-900-805-19 WIRE ASSY, FOCUS HV 1.84
If you are replacing the D board of the fly-back transformer, why not replace the wires as well?

If you have a defective one to rip open, have at it! The cables are so cheap that I amy order them myself so that I can answer the question in the future.

I would absolutely take one apart if I had a defective one!
If you do order the wires, let us know what the hidden connections look like.
I did multiple Google seaches for removal tips before I took the "cut and splice" route with the smaller red wire. I did find the "push and twist" method mentioned for the thicker red wire that runs up to the anode cap. But I had no luck with that on my set.

OK! I broke down and placed my order! 7.49 + 0.52 tax + 4.95 shipping = 12.96. I wonder if an instruction sheet is provided?

That's great! I look forward to your investigative report.

I received the wires to today. There are no installation instructions. Both ends of the WIRE ASSY, FOCUS HV wire are stripped back 3/8". One end includes a rubber cap that pushes over the connection. The end of the CAP ASSY, HIGH-VOLTAGE wire has a metal cap over it with an axial pin sticking out of the center. This is probably to make a better connection. Once again, there is a rubber cap to cover the connection. Nothing suggests twisting on or off. I'll take photographs and post them when I get a chance.

John,
Thanks for the interesting and helpful report on the flyback wires.
So do you think either of those wires can be mechanically released from the flyback without taking it apart? Perhaps they just pull out?

I suspect that they do just pull out. Wait until I post the pictures and judge for yourself. When you were working on your set, did you pull the rubber boots back to see what was there?

I don't clearly recall seeing the rubber boots when I attempted to remove the wires from the flyback. I thought there were hard plastic shafts or tubes that the wires disappeared into. But it's been a nearly a year and my memory is a bit fuzzy on that.
I do recall trying to pull each of the wires out but I didn't apply too much force. I was worried that I could break off the ends of the wires and be left without an easy way to reconnect them. So I disconnected the thicker red wire at the other "anode cap" end and I cut the smaller red wire running to the C-Board.
I never like cutting wires if I can avoid it but I was at least comfortable that I could splice that back together.
I look forward to seeing the photos.

Rather than make a project out of it, I only took one picture. The CAP ASSY, HIGH-VOLTAGE wire is on the left (pretty obvious) and the WIRE ASSY, FOCUS HV wire is on the right. The piece of spaghetti in the foreground was over the metal cap to protect it. The axial pin sticking out of the center of the cap is hollow to accommodate the wire, which is soldered to it. I suspect that if you pulled back the boots on the two wires, you might have been able to remove the wires from the FBT. What do you think?

I agree. It does look like both wires could be pulled out once the rubber boots were moved out of the way. (And, with the aid of your photo, I now recall seeing the rubber boots.)
I'll try removing the wires if I ever need to remove my D-Board again.

I know where you can get two new wires!
